Art Therapy

For those of you that read my blog yesterday you may have noticed that I briefly discussed art therapy. So what is art therapy exactly and how does it work? Natalie Rogers, a humanistic psychologist, is the pioneer of expressive art therapy. Expressive arts can be found in various forms such as dance and improv, painting, sculpting, and writing. The arts is used to create a safe environment, which makes it possible for individuals to express their deepest emotions through personal artwork.

This summer I had such an amazing opportunity to intern and mentor for Free Arts of Arizona, which is a nonprofit organization that works with at-risk youth from over 100 different treatment centers, homless shelters, and group homes across the valley. Free Arts of Arizona has amazing programs that give children the opportunity to express their deepest emotions through various types of artwork. Mentors and volunteers at Free Arts of Arizona are given the chance to enhance lives of many abused and homeless children by introducing expressive art therapy to their lives.

Remeber that you do not have to be an artist to be able to express your emotions through art and with art there are no strict rules that are simply black and white. If you are interested in volunteering and helping heal a life get involved and contact the Free Arts of Arizona office !
